Procrastination: The Gateway to Failure Procrastination in writing is very common and can result in a substantial waste of supposedly precious time. There are many reasons that explain why people procrastinate, but these reasons are not always the same from one individual to another. A wide variety of psychological aspects cause procrastination, one of which is anxiety. Everyone practices procrastination at one time or another in their lives, however, most people don't know the cause of this action, or lack thereof. Psychological causes that often outline procrastination include: a low feeling of self-worth, peak anxiety, and a self-destructive disposition. Furthermore, people who continually procrastinate appear to retain a level of conscientiousness that exceeds the average level. This means that people who repeatedly procrastinate generally withhold treatment that forces them to devote or show diligent care and effort. This careful attention to detail in achieving the desired goal often leads to an obsessive desire to avoid mistakes. The procrastinator's sense of reality is "more based on 'dreams and desires' of perfection or fulfillment as opposed to a realistic appreciation of one's obligations and potential" (Strub 1). There are several psychological causes that lead to procrastination. Author David Allen has identified two important psychological causes of procrastination in our daily lives. These psychological causes are directly linked to anxiety, not laziness. The first division constitutes things "too small to worry about, tasks that are annoying... half of paper... ten self-defined goals. When excuses are accepted or accommodated, the procrastinator's behavior is reinforced. , moving the problem forward. Procrastination can manifest itself as a temporary and infrequent mistake, or it can play the role of an ongoing infirmity that constantly plagues everyday life Works Cited McGarvey, Jason A.
