The country as it stood in the early part of the twentieth century was geared towards regeneration and recovery from World War I, the Great Depression, and many other socially crippling upheavals that were forever altering the United States in many different ways. Some changes were good, some were not so good. The spirit of loyalty and patriotism was alive and thriving in the air and in the hearts of all, and the literature of that time largely reflects the influence which this wave of patriotism brought upon the American people. Regionalism and the regional consciousness that accompanied it are very much reflected in many of the works we have read. Nearly all of the authors, including poets, that we have studied have touched on many of the same topics that we reflect on when we think about our heritage and our nation's history, and how that history has helped shape the country we have today. Two of the main social values that were visibly touched upon were loyalty and our ability to be able to selflessly sacrifice something that meant a lot to the characters in the works, be it a sense of self, a lover and so on . away. W.D. Howell's short story "Editha" is a very clear depiction of the idea of loyalty, while encompassing all the things that represent the concept of regionalism at its best. The protagonist Editha pushes her love George to fight in a war that neither he nor anyone else in her family deems fair and just, but overwhelmed by the fury of the region where Editha lived. "...at the same time as the war sensation was growing, she was perplexed by his lack of seriousness about it. She seemed to despise him even more than... half of the card... the personification of the fog "The fog comes upon the kitten." feet" shows how a natural event in nature can provide an example of how the world works. The people inside it are stealthy, etc. Finally in "Grass", when he says "I am the grass. Let me work.", he is talking about how we use something as simple as burial to cover up our mistakes in history and all the things we do that we are not so proud. We use our relationship with nature in many bad ways by polluting the world, building in every open space, etc. Regionalism and naturalism are evident in all areas of literature, particularly in the time period we studied. All the authors really showed how our relationships with our surroundings to the world and its influence on us and our influence on it, and also with the way we treat nature and everything comes back to haunt us.
