Total world cement consumption in 2012 is 3,736 Mt, up from 3,585 Mt in 2011 and 3,312 Mt in 2010. China is the largest consumer of cement, with a demand of 2,160 Mt. 2012, equal to 58% of total consumption. India is the second largest consumer of cement with a demand of 238,977 Mt up to 2012, consuming 6.4% of the total consumption. India is also the second largest producer of cement, producing 6.6% of the total cement produced in the world. The total cement production in the world in 2012 is 3600 Mt, of which India produces 240.61 Mt. This shows that India is self-sufficient in the cement sector. It consumes 99% of its production. EXPORTS The companies which contribute most of the cement industry in India are Ultra Tech Cement, Ambuja Cement, ACC Cement, JK cement, JP Cement. Many foreign companies like Lafarge, Holcim, Heidelberg Cements, have started coming to India due to the growing demand for cement across the world. Ultratech Cement is the largest cement manufacturer and exporter in India with an installed capacity of 57 million tonnes per annum. Ultratech cement exports around 30% of the country's total exports, exporting over 2.5 million tonnes per year. Its export market includes countries in the Indian Ocean, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Ambuja Cement is the third largest cement producer in India with an installed capacity of 27.25 Mt. It exports around 17% of the total production. Innovation and R&D initiatives in the cement industryThe Indian cement industry is the second largest producer in the world. Therefore, to become more competitive and sustain the current position, innovation through extensive research and development is critical for the Indian cement industry. The Indian cement industry should focus on upgrading paper-based applications for conveyor belts, due to which work is done more efficiently with the use of software. There are technologies that aim to modernize oven lines to meet customer needs. Clinker coolers such as H-cooler and Polytrack have also started to be used. Roto-seal technology has been used by some companies for cement bag packaging which helps reduce dust emission, downtime and product loss. Some companies like Ultra Tech Cement use vehicle-based GPS technology through which any interested party can track the real-time delivery status of their order. By using GPS the company focuses on increasing fleet efficiency and improving sales service to customers. As with Ultratech Cement's corporate website, it uses a fully web-based order management system with real-time visibility of order status.
