Topic > Reducing Dependence on Oil Will Reduce Climate Change

Climate change is happening whether politicians, oil companies, car manufacturers, scientists and the public admit it or not. There is scientific evidence that global surface temperatures are rising, sea levels are rising, Northern Hemisphere snow cover is retreating, glacier volume is shrinking, and climate extremes are increasing (Global Climate Change Indicators ). The cause of these rapid changes is the increase in greenhouse gases and one factor contributing to these increases is the emissions emitted by cars. The reason why climate change is a bigger problem than ever is because of the dependence the United States has on oil. America's dependence on oil threatens our national security, economy, and most importantly our environment. For example, the United States burns approximately “400 million gallons of gasoline every day, releasing 19 pounds of carbon dioxide per gallon into the atmosphere, more than 7.2 billion pounds of carbon per day” (US Oil Dependence Threatens Security, Economy , Environment: New Joint Report Shows Problems and Solutions to Oil Dependence in the United States). This is because driving involves burning fossil fuels, a process that emits gases that in the long run contribute to the increased amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and controversial climate change (King). Therefore, it is clear that oil-fueled cars have a very high impact on the environment. In order to help discourage the effects of greenhouse gases on the climate and environment, a new policy that will be provided by the EPA under the Clean Air Act needs to be put in place. This new policy should mandate that by 2020 all vehicles become hybrids and ultimately by 2040, using...... half of the paper ......r, Don and Amine Mahmassani. “State of Charge: Electric Vehicle Global Warming Emissions and Fuel Cost Savings in the United States.” Union of Interested Scientists (2012): n. page Union of Concerned Scientists.
