Topic > The power of storytelling in the media - 682

Human society and culture – even their perception of reality – are shaped by the information and images that humans receive through the media. A few generations ago, culture storytellers were people: family, friends, and others in communities. For many people today, the most powerful storytellers are television, movies, music, video games, and the Internet. Even though some people don't like to admit it, everyone is influenced by advertising, news, movies, music, video games and other forms of media. This is why the media is such a powerful cultural force, and why the media industry is such a big business. All media messages try to persuade people to believe or do something, for example; advertising tries to convince people to buy products while novels and television series do everything to appear realistic. To do this, they use specific techniques such as flattery, repetition, fear and humor. Other times, media can inspire the human imagination; advertising builds a fantasy world in which all problems can be solved with one purchase, and media literacy helps people recognize fantasy and constructively integrate it with reality. Sometimes, the media does not need verbal communication to send some kind of message. The old expression that states “a picture is worth a thousand words” is true in most cases. Sometimes, verbal communication alone cannot describe what a person thinks and what their imagination is like. Before photography was invented, people painted what they saw and how it looked, then they began to use painting to show a different reality, inspired by imagination. A painting by Canadian magical realism painter Rob Gonsalves, it depicts the Earth's sky transforming into Earth itself and space, and a pine forest with a clear la...... middle of paper..... .llar trip? Perhaps the purpose of this painting is to give people imagination and motivate them to make whatever comes to their mind into reality, and that the woman in the painting could be theirs in the future, but on another planet. The painting's message may be telling humans to hurry up and invent interstellar travel already, so they can leave earth. If so, why would humans want to leave the earth? Perhaps something terrible will happen to human life, such as the depletion of natural resources and the need for humans to search outside of Earth more, and that is why humans need to speed up the process of intergalactic travel. While fantasy can be enjoyable and fun, it can also influence human minds and inspire them to do wonderful things. The media can send messages in any way and the meaning can suggest something important and necessary.
