Topic > Reflection on the Merchant of Venice - 1440

I was chosen to be "Portia" for our class' play. Of course it stole the color from my cheeks when Mr. Mior honored me with being the main character in the play "The Merchant of Venice". I had mixed feelings as I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to play the character well. However, with the trust of the teachers and the support of my friends, I faced the challenge. It is undeniable that most of us have encountered difficulties in reading the 'Merchant of Venice'. The different values and cultures, as well as the Old English used in the Elizabethan era, baffled us as we read it. Therefore, during class time, we watched the film "The Merchant of Venice" to improve understanding of the show. Through the film I was able to illustrate the settings of the 'Merchant of Venice' and appreciate the messages conveyed. Additionally, it helped me develop Portia's character in the play, especially her intonation and facial expression. Besides that, while watching the film, we got some clues on how to make our comedy more lively and engaging. I had to memorize lines more than any of my classmates did. What I feared most is that Portia was a round character. His mood and style can vary from scene to scene. This is especially true of Scene IV, Act I, where Portia had to disguise herself as a lawyer to help her lover. Therefore, as I tried to capture the exact atmosphere of Portia, it helped me understand the style and atmosphere of the play. Additionally, when staging the show, we used modern English instead of the original script to ensure that our audience would not be disconcerted by the language and plot. Also, I had to do some research on my script to find and understand its meaning and in the end this helped me bring out the atmosphere of Portia. Automatically, by remembering the script, I also familiarize myself with the important quotes from the character. At first I don't like Portia very much. Geraldine James (1990), who played Portia in “The Merchant of Venice,” agrees with me as she found Portia quite unbearable. To me, Portia is just like other stereotypical fairy tale characters. I didn't really know how to play the character of Portia. I had to watch the film several times to feel my role.
