The book, Oedipus Rex, has a full range of characters. The conversation, activity and motivation revolve around the characters in the entire story. We find Oedipus Rex trying to move away from home to escape the prophecy. The prophecy states that he will kill his father and marry his mother. He also tries to clarify the murder of the old king. Oedipus marries a widow named Iokaste. He also receives advice from a seer named Tiresias. The purpose of this essay is to show the three positive and three negative qualities of these characters in direct and indirect characterization. I will find the qualities of Oedipus, Iokaste and Teiresias. What is the definition of "see"? I can see you over there. I understand what you mean. While someone is watching a movie, they get scared at the sight and quickly cover their eyes. As people, sometimes we are unable to discover the real truth. Sometimes blind people can see better than other people who can actually see. Oedipus cannot see the truth, but Teiresias saw it very clearly. He knows that Oedipus was blind and left him. "You call me insensitive. If only you could see the nature of your feelings," says Tiresias (page 119). This is a motif in the book. Oedipus was ignorant throughout his life. When Tiresias reveals the truth to him, he doesn't believe him. “I say that you are the murderer you seek,” says Tiresias (page 119). He also believes that Tiresias was with Creon and was trying to get rid of him. He is very quick to judge people. Oedipus is disrespectful throughout the story. He spoke angrily when he spoke to Tiresias and Creon. "Must I endure this from him? Get out of this place! Get out of my sight," Oedipus shouts at Teiresias (page 120). "No, not exile. It is your death that I want, so that the whole world can see what betrayal means," Oedipus tells Creon. Those were his negative qualities. Oedipus is also known for his intelligence. He solved the riddle of the sphinx and married Iokaste who was impressed. He goes around trying to attain knowledge. Oedipus was a caring person towards his people. As ruler, he speaks directly to them and actually solves their problems as if they were his own. “As sick as you are, no one is as sick as me.
