As Powell states, “a culturally responsive classroom climate is a safe one…characterized by respect and care. Teachers establish trusting relationships that allow students to take risks.” Furthermore, Richard states, “When students are subjected to unfair discrimination… the result can be poor performance.” Therefore, a central task of teachers is to create a classroom environment in which all students feel treated equally and respected. Overall, culturally relevant pedagogy is an approach that uses inclusive teaching practices in order to meet the needs of all students. However, implementing such practices into teaching can be difficult for teachers, especially novice teachers. Therefore, the last section of this report will highlight the challenges and effectiveness of using culturally responsive teaching
