Poe's life and experiences are all incorporated into his poetry and short stories. His life was full of tragedy. Poe's parents died when he was young, his adoptive mother, brothers and wife also died. Furthermore, throughout his life he accumulated debts and was constantly criticized by those around him. Dreamland is a solo journey into the world of dreams in search of something greater in life in what seems like a nightmare. Poe wrote this poem to show that people are constantly looking for a certain aspect to improve their lives. Poe shows the importance of this quest through his use of images/symbols, sounds/words, and figurative devices. The objects seen by the speaker and what they represent help set the mood and tone of the poem. The tone begins very darkly because Poe uses the paradox "sick angels" (2, 52), angels are the embodiment of good and to think of them as sick is a foreign thought. This image is difficult to imagine, but Poe uses it to show that the speaker is in a new world and feels lost in it with unfamiliar sights. After the angels Poe uses the term “Eidolon” (3, 53). This term means ghost and adds to the dark desperation of the poem. “Where an Eidolon, called NIGHT, reigns erect upon a black throne” (3-4) is an image of a strong ghost king who rules the world of dreams. His name is capitalized to show the power he has and the fear he instills in the speaker. This shows that the speaker feels lost and alone in this world because everything he has seen so far is foreign to him. The most mysterious creatures in the poem are the “ghouls”.(30) Ghouls in myths and tales are creatures that eat the flesh of corpses. It's hard to say whether Poe meant this or just used the term to mean a mysterious, evil other... middle of paper... the world seems less dark and more peaceful to the speaker. This is what the speaker was looking for, to be free from the pain of losing those he loved. Poe's life and experiences are all incorporated into his poetry and stories. His life was full of tragedy.
