This term means ghost and adds to the dark desperation of the poem. “Where an Eidolon, called NIGHT, reigns erect upon a black throne” (3-4) is an image of a strong ghost king who rules the world of dreams. His name is capitalized to show the power he has and the fear he instills in the speaker. The most mysterious creatures in the poem are the “ghouls”.(30) Ghouls in myths and tales are creatures that eat the flesh of corpses.
