Topic > Biography: Saint Philomena - 991

St. Philomena was born on January 10, 291 in Greece. The name of Saint Philomena in Latin is Filialuminis which means daughter of light. Saint Philomena's parents were both royalty from a small state in Greece. Saint Philomena had no brothers. When she was thirteen, Philomena was forced to marry Emperor Diocletian. “My virginity, which I promised to God, comes first of all, before you, before my homeland. My kingdom is Heaven." Saint Philomena rejected the emperor because she had promised herself that her virginity belonged to God. Because Saint Philomena did not want to accept his hand in marriage, she forced the guards to strip her and whip her. Thinking her injuries were beyond repair, the guards chained her in a prison, assuming she would die slowly. Filomena recovered with the help of an angel. When the emperor tried to threaten her, she still refused to marry him. This time, the emperor ordered the guards to wrap a chain attached to an anchor around her neck and drown her in the Tiber River. Two angels were sent to save Saint Philomena. When she rose from the river she was dry and unharmed, yet she was accused of using mysterious powers of non-verisimilitude. After this incident, people who watched were amazed and began to accept Christianity. The emperor then ordered his men to shoot arrows at her. Instead of killing Philomena, the archers were killed because the arrows bounced back towards them. She was once again accused of using magical powers. Because the emperor was exhausted from his multiple false attempts to kill her, she was beheaded. She was killed at three in the afternoon, the same time as Jesus. The day of her death was August 10, 304 at the age of thirteen in Rome, Italy.
