Topic > A quick look shows that children's toys are gender specific

Gender roles in toys are extremely obvious. The breakdown has not changed in so many years which we all respect and follow without question. Taking a trip to the local Toys R Us store showed me how obvious the line was drawn for the genders, showing a specific division of the two. The layout of the stores clearly establishes the boundary between toys for girls and toys for boys. There are very few islands that will mix between the sexes. For this project I selected the following age groups; infant, preschool and school age with particular attention to toys for girls. Infant toys were the only age group where the sexes mixed. My first selection is Laugh and Learn to Love Playing the Sister. This stuffed dog shows the dominant colors of pink and purple, has a bow in his hair and wears a skirt. The sister has some non-specific colors including blue, green, yellow and the dog is brown. This toy is marketed as a toy that can sing and teach the alphabet, numbers, and songs. The company is passing on to the consumer this toy that will entertain and teach your child, preferably a girl, at the same time. The second toy I looked at was the Wall & Roll Rider. This gender-neutral toy is marketed as a learning to walk toy. This knight is advertised as good for both genders, the packaging shows both a girl and a boy playing. The main colors of the Walk & Roll Rider are blue, yellow, red and orange. Next, we move to the 3 Lil' Piggies Playhouse. This gender-neutral toy is advertised as a shape learning toy for any child. The packaging shows a gender-nonspecific Caucasian child wearing neutral-colored clothing, smiling and playing. The latest toy for this age group was the Sit to Stand Music Skool. This gender-neutral toy features a girl on the package, but... middle of paper... the electronic puppet is just a new and interesting way for kids to gross people out. The fine line between boys and girls when it comes to toys becomes established very early in life. This segregation is created by parents showing children what is socially acceptable for each gender to play with. This segregation also shows up in movies and television shows. Ideally it would be nice to see a boy not be teased if he wanted to play with a doll or a girl with a ninja warrior. It may be more socially acceptable for a girl to go beyond the norm than it would be for a boy. In my opinion the worst toy I found was the Ugly pet, this pet encouraged bad manners and virtually no imagination. The toys I found were the best of the movie character additions. These toys were gender neutral and would be socially acceptable to both genders.
