This course includes eight readings on how to deal with reality. The first group focuses on people who can face reality with the things that life gives them, while the second group focuses on people who cannot face reality. Both groups are able to deal with reality to some extent, however they are only presented with how they deal with the reality of the situation. By analyzing the characters in these poems and stories, students will gain insight into how facing reality can affect us in thousands of ways. Knowing how to face reality The second group of texts presents adults who are able to face the reality of their situations. Two poems and two stories that present adults who are able to face the consequences of their actions or the negative things that life throws at them. Poems The poems included in the section are Nikki-Rossa and Future Connected By. The poems include an African American writer whose poems focus on race and social issues, and poems that focus on the working class. Nikki-RosaWalter not only did Shoba no longer care about their appearance, but she was trying to hide her sadness by adding more work to her workload. “The longer Shoba stayed out, the more she began putting in extra hours at work and taking on additional projects” (302). Shukumar was starting to let go too. Furthermore, he was initially focused on finishing the final chapters of his thesis on agrarian revolts in India. “Until September he had been diligent if not dedicated, summarizing chapters, outlining topics on pads of yellow-lined paper” (303). However, this came to a halt with the death of their son because Shukumar "now lay in their bed until he grew bored, looking at his side of the wardrobe" (303). She would also forget to do her daily hygiene routines like washing her hair
