Theoretical Approaches 2Many theoretical approaches can be used when evaluating the behavior of characters in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest”. The characters are thought to be mentally ill, however by examining them through the use of theoretical approaches one realizes that there may not be any problems with the characters. Nurse Rachet, a head nurse who conducts group therapy and dispenses medications, may be responsible for the character's behavior. Nurse Ratchet constantly talks to the characters about their supposed problems during group therapy sessions. He forces Martini and Billy Bibbett to discuss their problems during almost every group therapy session they have. It is therefore reinforcing the problems they are perceived to have, ultimately making them feel mentally unstable and unable to leave the facility. Interestingly, only two people in the asylum are required to be present, the rest are free to leave when they feel recovered. Nurse Rachet uses what has been called labeling theory. Nurse Rachet is in a position of power, which makes the labels she gives the characters to be true not only to outsiders, but also to the characters themselves. “Once a person is defined as abnormal, all of their other behaviors and characteristics are colored by that label” (Rosenhan p.4).
