In today's society the media plays an important role in our perception of how some problems in our society are getting better, worse or staying the same. A hot-button issue over the years has been random shootings and gun control. It seems like a few times a year there are very high profile random shootings at schools or other public places that get the attention of the entire county for a week or two. During this media fallout many different and strong points of view emerge as to why gun control is not doing enough to protect us from these heinous crimes or that it is not gun control that is the problem, but better yet the people who commit these crimes which are the problem. problem. Many journalists and media outlets very often take stances on gun control during this time and create a prejudice against guns and the right people should own them. The following will compare and contrast the opposing media and their distorted reporting on gun violence and how the general public perceives it based on the information presented by the news. Sources will be analyzed based on the placement of articles, headlines, images, what information is included and omitted, and the organizations attached to the news. NBC and Fox News will be the sources of gun control issues. A random shooting recently took place at an Indiana grocery store that made headlines on the NBC and Fox websites. The first comparison between the two was where this article would be found. Both websites had a US news section with a crime and courts subheading where this article could be found. Positioning here is simple as both are classified in the exact same way. The difference between the two sources, however, is quite clear... halfway through the document... it becomes more bland and disjointed. A neutral reader would definitely gain a different perspective if they came across the articles independently of each other. This confirms that there is a bias in the media, which would have a profound effect on how one views gun control issues if only one side of the issue was considered. " Fox News.
