In "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, setting is used as a way to predict the tragic outcome of the story. The ending of the story is unexpected upon first reading, but upon closer inspection one can see several clues and foreshadowing techniques used by O'Connor to hint at what would ultimately happen, particularly in his use of setting. The outcome of the story is hinted at through the description of the family's scenic journey through Georgia, Red Sammy, and the desert road they travel on. The depiction of the family's surroundings as they drive through Georgia offers many clues to their tragic deaths. At first it seems that O'Connor is limited to providing vivid descriptions of the land, but as the story progresses one begins to realize a consistent theme within the setting. While driving the family "passed a large cotton field with five or six graves fenced off in the center, like a little island" (660). What makes this passage so significant is the fact that six people are traveling in the car, suggesting that the family will also end up in the graves. As if this wasn't a big enough clue, later in their travels the grandmother recalls an old plantation she had visited near "Toombsboro" (662). Hearing this place, the word tomb comes to mind, which symbolizes death. It's also interesting that she thinks the old plantation is in this specific town, since her desire to go to that house is initially what causes the family's premature end. The dilapidated atmosphere of Red Sammy gives the reader an eerie and disturbing feeling of what will happen to the family? The first description given of Red Sammy is that it is a tower. The towers are seen as large and intimidating, and the interior is described as "a long dark room" (661). This gives the impression that Red Sammy is dark, dirty, empty and neglected. This impression is then reinforced by June Star, who states that she "wouldn't live in a rundown place like this for a million dollars!" (661).Everything in this place is dilapidated. Red Sammy's car, which he is seen repairing when they arrive, is also broken. This provides an omen to the family's car, which will soon break down after the accident. The color red is also mentioned, in Red Sammy's name, recalling what the color red symbolizes, things like fire, blood, death and the devil..
