Our 20th century Canadian story of the treatment of immigrants was indeed biased and to some extent still holds true today. Numerous immigrants have had to lose, if not all, but many, their possessions, valuables and family members, in order to possess Canadian citizenship. People traveled long distances to seek a better life; Canadians have faced many problems of racism due to their differences, which in fact have affected and ruined many lives. Immigrants were once shamefully discriminated against and exploited by the changing role of the Canadian government, producing a dark side of Canada's history. The three events that accurately confirmed that immigrants had difficult lives were “The Boat of People,” Chinese due to Chinese Exclusion Act, and the most improved Merit Point System. These have affected Canadian society significantly and negatively and have helped us learn, improve and equalize our society for all. The boat load of people consisted mainly of Vietnamese, Laotians and Cambodians from the 1970s to 1980s. After the conflict between South and North Vietnam, people fled to seek greater freedom rights, but their intentions were not maintained as many ended up dying. The two conflicts that produced huge amounts of refugees occurred when Indochina collapsed due to large-scale conflict and warfare between Vietnam, Kampuchea, and China. Another reason was when Vietnam attacked the Chinese forced into the north. All the makeshift boats on which the refugees traveled were congested and subject to enormous safety risks. The conflict was so terrible that, out of 1.5 million, the estimated total number of deaths is 50,000 to 20,000.
