Today people describe Puritans with their biased point of view. It's not unfathomable why people don't like Puritans. Puritan society and today's society are very different. Puritan society was very reserved; people could only believe in God and the Bible was the law. Unlike Puritan society, today's society places no limits on religion. Even though the Puritans had a bad influence on today's society, the Puritans played a vital role in building the United States. If you look around more carefully, you will easily realize that some things you took for granted were actually influenced by the Puritans and are very significant and necessary for today's society. Puritan influences on the United States today are found in the areas of economics, government, education, church, and social customs. The influences of the Puritans on the economy are very palpable. On the US dollar you can clearly see the phrase “In God we trust”. Money is the most significant instrument in an economy; therefore, a statement about God on U.S. currency accentuates the role of the Puritans in determining the U.S. economy. Today people recommend frugality. Even people like Bill Gates, Carlos Slim and Warren Buffet don't use their money lavishly. Bill Gates, the richest man in the world, only has a $100,000 car; Carlos Slim, the second richest man in the world, is known for his stinginess: he even checks how much he spent on his socks; finally, Warren Buffet, the third richest man in the world, is known for his frugality and generosity. He still has his beat-up car and his house is considerably smaller than those of other rich people. The reason why all people try to avoid prodigality is also the influence of the Puritans. The Puritans recommended poverty: “Even if a member of the group became very poor, the Puritans did not expel him but even extolled him for his industry and frugality” (Beeke 101). Today, the economic system of the United States is capitalism. The definition of capitalism is “the economic system in which businesses are owned and operated for profit by individuals and not by states” (Longman 261). This economic system reflects the life of the Puritans in the United States. The Puritans landed on wild lands several centuries ago. To establish all the Europe-like environments, the Puritans had to do many things. However, they did not have a government like the European ones because they did not want to be subordinated to the power of a king or dictator..
