IntroductionThis report provides an analysis of the multi-meaning symbols in the novel The Great Gatsby and the meanings behind them. The symbols used in the novel will be highlighted and described in full through this report. These symbols are The Eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg, which is a billboard found in the Valley of Ashes, the Green Light, which is a light radiating from the end of Daisy Buchanan Pier, the Valley of Ashes, and the multiple colors used throughout the novel. These symbols were found using various world wide web sites, such as Father Ryan, Google Books, Jstor, and a few others. In this report there are examples of meanings interpreted by others for the symbols, such as professors, scholars, and incorporations. Relationships between characters that do not fall within the meaning of a symbol are also presented in this report. This report will indicate the meanings of each symbol presented and the importance of this symbol in the novel itself. This report will relate the symbols to key story points to support the meaning and analysis provided. The Eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg God Looks Down on American Society The eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg see everything. They are located right in the middle of the Valley of Ashes, which is a fictional place in the novel, located between New York and East and West Egg. The eyes bear witness to all the corruption in the morals of others. For example, in the novel, Tom Buchanan has an affair with a woman from the Valley of Ashes, and as they meet to go to their apartment in New York, they pass this billboard. The eyes see Tom and Myrtle, his lover, running away together, while Tom leaves his wife at home.
