Isabel Allende in The House of the Spirits played many seemingly minor characters who ended up having a more important role than expected. One of the unexpected characters was Alba. Although Alba was not born until chapter nine, she played a significant role in the plot of the story and the character dynamics of the Trueba family and other strong men and women. This then led to Allende building powerful and outspoken personalities to ultimately create a strong character, Alba, who ended the novel with a shocking and hopeful ending. Alba was brought into the world as a beautiful baby girl, with good astrological luck. In her first hours, she already had traits that resembled two strong-minded characters, Rosa and Pedro Tecero Garcia. “[Clara]… pasted the first greenish locks of the little girl's hair [with]… various [other] portraits that allow us to see her as she was then: an extraordinary tiny creature… with no other sign of human intelligence if not his glittering black eyes, which bore an expression of ancient wisdom” (Page 262). The first character description in the entire book is that of Rosa, who had the important role of being Esteban Trueba's first love. This tied back to Alba, who was Esteban's first love after many years of pain and loveless relationships. The importance of Pedro Tecero Garcia has been such that he has always been a constant in history. Even during his and Blanca's childhood, Esteban's bloody riot at the Tres Marias, Blanca's marriage to The Count and the Time of Terror, he was always present, both in person and in thought. While Alba was growing up in the "big house on the corner", she received a strange and unexpected upbringing from her twin uncles, Jaime and Nicholás. Jaime and Nic...... middle of paper ...... related role in life of the Trueba family. Alba and Clara are the only two characters who maintained a relationship with all the other members of the family, including Esteban, Alba was the only person who deflected Esteban Trueba's and his bad behavior has ever shown tenderness. Above all, Clara and Alba are the only reason why Esteban stays in the “big house on the corner”. Alba being the most influential character, brought a resolution to the story. It was the act of forgiveness of Alba towards Esteban Garcia and the Security Police to bring the novel to a happy conclusion. Alba's narration made the story begin to end and the end began that haunted his family for generations. This further demonstrates the power of many outspoken personalities coming together as one.
