Philosophy itself is an unidentifiable subject due to the lack of specificity in the fields it touches. It is “defined” as a way for humans to fight for themselves in this reality we live in. No one has the answers to who we are and why we live. The value of philosophy changes character as history changes, so the meaning of philosophy is what we as individuals perceive it to be. Although subjective, there are fundamental ideals that unite the beliefs of all philosophy, such as the idea of the self. Philosophers are not born to answer questions, but to question questions in order to find enlightenment. Self-search is a difficult journey as it is a highly debated topic without definitive clarification. Ultimately, the most important question of philosophy is: “What makes you you?” Studies of the self refer to the fundamental assumptions of human nature. Every discussion of “life or death [in philosophy] speaks of the physical body and human consciousness” with relationships to rationality or irrationality” (Velasquez, 51). Human nature leads most philosophers to believe that all human beings have a self within them. Philosophy defines the self as “the ego or “I” that exists in a physical body and is conscious and rational” (Velasquez, 52). This complex belief states that, as humans, the self drives us to think to derive achievable goals. The self's ability to think, reason and perceive, believed by many philosophers, is to relate to our body and lead us to achieve a destiny. Philosophers who believe in the idea of the self believe that the self is essentially independent of the physical body. It is a non-physical element of… half of the article… in every topic discussed in this article, it can be concluded that the idea of individuality explains the existence of life. Time, morals and opinions can be discussed based on individual perception and thoughts through the self, the enduring self. Reality is a difficult element to explain but through the ability of ourselves to shape the world around us based on our skepticism and our knowledge; we are capable of existing independently. Like philosophy, there are no answers but only the journey to seek the answer. Through life, living and existing one will achieve self-discovery. As stated earlier, the value of philosophy changes character as history changes, so the meaning of philosophy is what we as individuals perceive it to be. Works Cited Velasquez, Manuel.
