So what can we, as a society, do about these issues? First of all, it is necessary to change who screens prisoners: this must be done by a health worker, not by guards. Secondly, we need to change the segregation we see in prisons. While it is critical to have a safe space for those in the LGBTQ community who will be most targeted, making these inmates wear different colors is discriminatory and oppressive. Finally, a new law must be passed according to which trans prisoners receive their hormones and all other necessary medications. These three small changes could help prolong the lives and well-being of many trans prisoners. Even though society is only making inroads through acceptance, there is still a lot of work to be done.
