Although it may seem like a small incident could be tiny, the effects have slowly built up from these biases. White people who display microaggressions, face their explicit racism, and feel satisfied that they do not exemplify any prejudice. They don't know their underlying intentions, but this is evident to people of color. As a result, mistrust, misperception, and miscommunication towards white people accumulates. (Dovidio 89) In Sue's essay the theme of “denial of racial reality” is especially true for Asians. One meeting of a white person said that “Asians are the new white people.” The white person may not understand the offense taken at something he or she said. People may also be considered “sensitive” when confronted with the situation. (Sue 78) Therefore, microaggressions are difficult to report openly as they may be accused of overreacting and may not elicit reactions towards Whites.
