The Gifts of Evil In the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne there are many characters who have committed sins. In the Puritan community they followed the word of God and banished all sins. These sins in The Scarlet Letter were seen as the work of the Black Man, which means the work of Satan. The sins committed were harmful and painful to people and their souls. Hester and Mr. Dimmesdale committed adultery by giving birth to a daughter named Pearl. But Roger Chillingworth committed the worst sin by using his gifts for evil. Hester Prynne was the main character in The Scarlet Letter. Hester Sin was committing adultery with the minister Arthur Dimmsdale. Giving birth to a child named Pearl of Pure Sin. By committing her sin they punished her. “If you believe that this is for the peace of your soul, and that your earthly punishment will thereby be made more effective for salvation, I command you to pronounce the name of your companion in sin and misfortune!” (98) the community made her go up on the scaffold for public humiliation. Wearing the letter "A" on his clothing signified adultery as another punishment. The community shunned Hester and Pearl by watching them as Satanists work her crime of adultery was committed to remind herself of what she has done. Furthermore, he stayed to protect Dimmesdale from Chillingworth. Reverend Dimmesdale was the Puritan minister of Boston. Dimmesdale's sin was committing adultery with Hester, creating a child named Pearl his sin is a secret that protects himself. "Do not be silent out of false pity and tenderness for him; for, believe me, Hester, even if he should come down from a high place and stand there beside you, on your pedestal... .... middle of the paper ... or confess during his life.(191) Chillingworth found weeds in the cemetery causing Dimmesdale's memory to reflect on him regarding his secret. Chillingworth goes to the cemetery and shows him doing Satan's work, picking weeds from the graves committed the worst sin by using his gifts for evil. Roger Chillingworth was a doctor who treated Mr. Dimmesdale Using his knowledge and skills he kept him alive to see him suffer because he knew that Dimmesdale and Hester sinned also suffer Pearl because Dimmesdale never claimed her and she didn't know who her father was I believe he was the worst sinner because he left Dimmesdale alive making him suffer but also making everyone around him suffer because of its consequences.
