IntroductionAn environmental policy refers to an organization's commitment to laws, regulations and other policy mechanisms regarding environmental issues and sustainability. These environmental problems can involve anything from air and water pollution to deforestation and solid waste management. Today we live in a world full of developing countries that face environmental problems and degradation every day. Yemen, known for being one of the least developed countries, is facing several environmental issues as well as social and political challenges as it moves towards development and becomes a much more stable country. In addition to facing an inadequate education system and lack of access to healthcare, Yemen faces a far more damaging cause. The BBC states: “Yemen is facing a major water crisis and some estimates suggest the capital, Sana'a, could run dry within 10 years” (2013). Water scarcity is the lack of sufficient available water resources to meet water use needs within the region, coupled with the lack of safe and clean drinking water. It is one of the most important global issues affecting approximately more than 1.1 million people worldwide. The history of Yemen and the environmental issue Yemen, officially known now as "The Republic of Yemen", is an Arab country located in the Middle East, extending from the southwest to the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, as well as being located south of Saudi Arabia and west of Oman. Yemen is the second largest country on the Arabian Peninsula, with a population of nearly 20 million people and an annual population growth rate of approximately 3%.
