Topic > The pros and cons of pressure on government

The two main ones are pluralism and elitism. Some people believe that pressure groups promote pluralism, which means that power is equally distributed in society, allowing pressure groups to contribute to changing laws and policies, for the benefit of society. Furthermore, everyone has access to information. However, others think that pressure groups only reinforce elitism, meaning that power is limited and preserved to richer and larger pressure groups, and only a few of them have access to communication with the government and being listened to. The government also chooses to ignore some pressure groups that waste many people's time. Advocacy groups raise awareness and educate citizens and the government. They also allow citizens to participate in government affairs and not just vote once every 5 years. However, pressure groups have limited power and can only influence the government, since they are in power. Furthermore, more pressure groups have failed than achieved their goal. Furthermore, pressure groups are more focused on their issue, which leads them to be biased towards it, which can also lead to violent behavior to assert their reasons, going against all laws and democracy. For example, the BMA is able to “threaten” the government if it doesn't do what it says. This only demonstrates and promotes anti-democraticity
