Child prostitution is a long-standing problem around the world; the World Congress went so far as to label it a “contemporary form of slavery” (World Congress against the Sexual Exploitation of Children, 1996). While many believed it to be somewhat contained, with today's emerging platforms, the problem of child prostitution is growing at an unprecedented rate. Webcam prostitution and child sex tourism are recent phenomena, whose evolution has led to the spread of child prostitution in an independent culture. The “information age” of the 21st century has ushered in a technological revolution, placing the focus of its growth on global connectivity and the World Wide Web. While many recognize this era as progressive, it has also fueled the rise of a new form of child sexual exploitation. Webcam prostitution, or webcam child sex tourism, is an epidemic of minors being paid to perform sexual acts via webcam (Terre des Hommes, 2013). Terre des Hommes (2013), a children's rights organization, created a fictional "computer-generated" 10-year-old Filipino girl named Sweetie to further investigate this phenomenon. “Sweetie” was placed in a total of 19 chat rooms, where she was offered sexual acts by 20,172 adult men from 71 different countries, who were told her age. The informal Terre des Hommes (2013) “sting” operation identified 1,000 online predators in just 10 weeks and estimated that there were 750,000 online predators at any given time (Terre des Hommes, 2013).
