All the students who took part in this project were freshmen in their first semester at the state university and almost all of them came directly from high school. All but one had experience studying abroad for periods ranging from a year to, in one case, a lifetime. Only one student had his entire educational experience in Japan, but this student also mostly attended international schools in Japan. So they were a very, very diverse group in terms of international experience, as the graph above shows, as there is an icon on the map for every country in which a student spent at least a year as a student. This information comes from a classroom survey while I was giving a presentation about this class and these students to the larger ELA community as part of the summer teacher retreat program. The students themselves were at the top of the range of English language skills at Sate University Level and almost native speakers, in fact some of them spoke English better than Japanese and many had a third or fourth knowledge of the language. In terms of English, they all scored 650 or above on the TOEFL admissions test, and they all performed well in personal interviews with ELA teachers before being selected for Level 1. Because they all spent time time in English speaking countries or schools this was not surprising, in fact 9 students were from the same class at ICU High School, next to my university and just across the ELA building. In common with the ICU undergraduate student body in general, the gender composition of the class was 65% female and 35% male as there were 8 males and 14 females.
