At first, some of the Founding Fathers did not expect the American government to be filled with multiple political parties after creating the Constitution in the late 1780s. Even George Washington stated in his farewell address: “However [political parties] may from time to time respond to popular ends, it is probable that, in the course of time and things, they will become powerful engines through which shrewd, ambitious men and without principles they will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and usurp the reins of government for themselves.” In simpler words, Washington was stating how political parties can lead to the corruption of the government envisioned by the Founding Fathers. Despite what some Founding Fathers originally thought, political parties have developed and continue to influence modern politics. Due to people's natural instinct to have opinions, political parties developed in early America, however political parties also brought out rivalries and problems among citizens.
