Topic > Summary of Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery

The story begins with Matthew and Marrila Cuthbert, unmarried siblings living on a farm. Matthew is in his sixties and getting older, so both Marilla and Matthew decide to adopt a boy to help them on the farm. But a little surprise came: when Matthew went to pick up the boy, in his place there was an orphan girl waiting there, named Anne. They later discovered that the orphanage had mistakenly sent Anne to the Cuthberts instead of to a boy. Marrila isn't convinced to keep Anne, while Matthew thinks she's a sweet and talkative girl. Deep down Marilla ends up enjoying Anne and decides to keep her. Anne struggles with social skills and school, but no one has ever taught her right and wrong before. An example of when Anne first struggled to move into Green Gables was when she burst out yelling at Mrs. Rachel, Mrs. Rachel made fun of Anne's red hair by insulting her appearance. Anne tries her best to please Marilla with her social skills, although she often struggles. Another example is when Marilla, Anne and Matthew would invite the new priests and his wife to dinner. Anne was very excited to invite them and especially Mrs. Allan's pastor's wife baking her a cake but instead of using vanila she accidentally uses a liniment turning the cake into a disaster. Anne never had a real friend until she met Diana, her neighbor. . Diana and Anne became very close friends and became "heart" friends. One day Anne invites Diana to tea and accidentally gives her blackcurrant wine instead of raspberry syrup. Diana returns home drunk because she drank the currant wine. Diana's mother believes that Anne intoxicated Diana on purpose. For this reason Diana was no longer allowed to see Anne. But one day Diana's brothers fell ill with croup. T......middle of paper......life grows but he has made his life exciting with adventures and his imagination. He explored and opened his mind to imagination, which made his life so exciting. The way he spoke to people also intrigued me. Anne was out there, she was a free soul and she expressed her feelings. “Life is worth living as long as there is laughter in it.” -Anna. I think the author wanted us to understand that we should laugh more and worry less. This made me realize that I have to be cheerful, laugh and be joyful. “Besides trying and winning, the best thing is to try and fail. chapter 35” This really resonated with me, I think it's something we can all incorporate into our lives. I also think this was one of the messages the author wanted the reader to understand. I really liked the book, it was very interesting and fun. I loved all the characters, especially Anne, she was a free spirit.
