There are nearly 26 million animals in the United States being tested for commercial and scientific use. The AWA (Animal Welfare Act) places limitations on which institutions and scientists can use animals. Since 1850, the AWA has protected approximately 1,134,693 animals, but has allowed approximately 25 million other animals to be used scientifically and commercially. The fact that there are approximately 25 million animal species not protected by the AWA has led many people to be against animal testing. The AWA sets minimum housing standards and also requires regular inspections by veterinarians. Animals not protected by the Animal Welfare Act are fish, birds, rats and other cold-blooded animals, which make up 95% of the animals tested on; and because these animals are not protected, scientists are able to mistreat and abuse these species. According to the Humane Society International, “animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force-feeding, forced inhalations, deprivation of food and water, prolonged periods of physical restraint, infliction of burns and other wounds to study healing processes, infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies and "killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, breaking of the neck, decapitation or other means". Even though rabbits are protected by the AWA, many cosmetic companies use them for the "Draize Eye test", which is used to understand how irritating their beauty and health care products are to the human eye. 'These are rabbits who remain incapacitated in breeding facilities with their eyelids held open by clips, sometimes for several days, so that they cannot blink away the products being tested.' That seems pretty painful, considering when a reaction to chemicals like makeup and shampoo is exposed to the naked... medium of paper... light moving along the earth."" Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let's do the humanity in our image and likeness, so that he may have dominion over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky, over the livestock and over all wild animals and over all creatures that move along the earth."
